Tackling AMR through a ‘One Health’ approach: European Parliament adopts Resolution
EPHA welcomes the European Parliament’s vote on the non-binding resolution European One Health Action Plan against Antimicrobial Resistance, adopted on 13 September 2018 in Strasbourg with an overwhelmingly positive vote of 589 votes in favour. Rapporteur MEP Karin Kadenbach (S&D, AT) expressed that “diseases are transmitted from people to animals and vice versa, and that is why we support the holistic approach of the ‘One Health’ initiative”.
The Resolution welcomes further measures to be taken to curb AMR through a ‘One Health’ approach and calls on the European Commission and Member States to develop public health messages to raise public awareness on the use of antibiotics as well as urges the Commission to conduct a mid-term and ex-post evaluation of the One Health Action Plan and to involve all relevant stakeholders in the process. The Resolution also stresses that Member States do not equally possess sufficient resources to develop and implement comprehensive national AMR strategies and hence, more dedicated funding should be made available in this regard.
